Nature Publishing Group 發表新期刊 Nature Education

   根據最新一期的UKSG Serials-eNews(No.137)有提到Nature Publishing Group launches Nature Education，知名的出版社Nature Publishing Group(以下簡稱Nature)，即將開始出版與教育相關的期刊，名為Nature Education，以拓展它們新的出版領域，傳統上Nature被歸類為STM的出版社，從它們出版的主題學科可以略窺一二，此新刊物的誕生，似乎意味著Nature要將觸角往外延伸，不過從此新聞可知，新期刊可能會先將重點放在biology, chemistry and physics三個主題與教育有關的議題上，提供數位化的科學學習解決方案，Nature並指派Vikram Savkar為其新刊物的Publishing Director，他畢業於哈佛大學，最近一個工作是在Pearson公司，也就是與教育類相關的知名領導出版社，對此Nature也發出新聞稿，以上資訊供大家參考。

The 2006 72nd IFLA and I are all in Seoul

   As a part time graduate student in the LIS field, I am very glad to have this opportunity to attend the 72nd IFLA in Korea. I am not alone, there were over 50 people joined this tour included Library Association of the R.O.C.(Taiwan) and 13 students from National Taiwan Normal University’s Graduate Institute of Library & Information Studies, Professor Chao-Chen, Chen led my classmates and I to IFLA.
   This is the second time I traveled to Korea, Seoul was really a big city and their government also provided full support to this international conference. Both of my classmates and I learned a lot from this journey. During this trip, I not only joined the seminars but also took city and library tours, below are my IFLA and Seoul experiences.

   Location – 72nd IFLA was hold in COEX Convention and Exhibition Center. It’s really a big place with good formulation, the office buildings, hotels and shopping mall are all around, below those buildings, the underground space was very huge, the first weekend during IFLA, there were Chinese called “people mountain people sea” there (meaning : huge crowds of people), although IFLA had thousands of participants, but it’s not easy to meet each other.
   Seminars – The story of a flash flood ripped through Manoa Valley on October 30, 2004 and annihilated the ground floor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Hamilton Library astonished me. They showed me many pictures and told me how they saved their maps collection and how to ask for help and support from government, this true story reminded me that maybe libraries should do something to prevent from this kind of natural disasters.
   Poster Session – I saw the poster of “The Winner of Best Poster Session Award 2006”, the topic is “A Study on the Use of Public Libraries by the Homeless People in Taipei” by Ms Sheue-Fang Song and Ms Hui-Tzu Hung, Ms Hung observed and interviewed the homeless people and also indicated that National Taichung Library provided a shower room for homeless people, this facility was very useful to them. This study gave me a new vision about how to handle homeless people problems.
   Library tours – I visited The National Library of Korea, it has a collection totaling 6 million volumes and their digital library is still under construction. I liked one of it’s service, the reader can reserved books via internet, then system will deliver the books to the box in floor one, and when the reader off duty, they can use their library card to check out those books.
   City tours – Professor Chen led us to the Gyeongbok Palace, The National Palace Museum, Cheonggyecheon (a brook in the Seoul), Cheong Wa Dae(the executive office of their President), Gyeongbok Palace was established in 1395, the Korean preserved their heritage very well.They did a good job in mix of contemporary and. classic styling in their city.

   Most impressed – The Opening Ceremony and Minister's Gala Reception were very cool, thousands of librarians came from more than 100 countries sit together and had dinner together, I am very impressed.
   Most valued – It’s friendship, I acquainted many friends there, they came from Japan, Korea, Germany, and that’s why I have the chance to write this report. The years rolled by, but the friendship will still exist.
   Most marvelous - I was very impressed by the Cultural Evening, when bus took us to the Sejong Centre, the traffic polices blocked all the cars on the high way, just let our bus passed by, I felt so honor, and no doubt, the show was spectacular.
   Most delicious - Kimchi was everywhere, and it was very delicious. But not everyone loved this food.

網誌改版日記

本網誌的Blogger系統,不久前宣佈了正式版的推出,由於此系統的使用者眾多,不是一宣佈轉換,就可以馬上使用,我到了前兩天才能用此新功能,因此畫面有些小變動,主要是可以增加標籤的功能,很實用

幾個適用於圖書館部落格的工具--Widget

   話說在淡大圖書館主辦的【Web 2.0研討會】之後呢，才發現不少圖書館已啟用了部落格的服務，這些部落格中有些是屬於交朋友性質的(為什麼這麼說呢!請參見小故事)，這個是搏感情型的，有些是佈告欄型的，有的還在剛起步階段，當然也有建置完善，跟主題型的，有的館更推出自己的widget服務，供讀者下載。根據上次研討會時，梁董跟Ted他們調查是有11所大學，32個網誌，現在不知道有沒有更多。
   個人進入網誌的世界不會很久，有朋友說，你寫的那些東西都不知道怎麼回應，另一方面也是想知道大家的想法，所以漸漸的發現了一些適用於部落格不錯用的小工具(英文是叫Widget，中文有人說是插件)，由很多部落格都在使用了，網路也很多介紹，這邊就留做個資料，可供將來參考。
一、留言版：
   有一個免費的留言版工具Cbox，只要上去註冊留個資料，就可以得到語法，貼在自己的部落格中使用，當作留言版，頗方便的，若圖書館的部落格沒有用另設留言版，這個可以加減支援一下。
二、互動式聊天工具：
   還有一種是互動式聊天型的plugoo，可以連接MSN，Google Talk與Yahoo及時通，另一個是滿常見的MeeboMe，Shoutbox大家也可以參考看看，這幾種都滿實用的，掛上去部落格之後，就可以線上交談，圖書館若沒有提供MSN之類的參考服務的話，在部落格中，可以使用，就不會有那麼急著回覆的壓力了。
三、線上問卷調查：
   今天發現這個polldaddy，據說是可以支援中文，可以用來做小型的問卷調查，還有一個就是之前有用的icebrrg，但它不支援中文，這些放在圖書館的部落格中，做個小調查，其實是滿好用的。
其他還有很多，也歡迎大家補充推薦，以上的設定有的牽涉到所架設平台的不同，有的平台也提供自己的Widget，有機會試試便才知道。
在這Web 2.0的時代中，很多權利都下放給使用者了，而以上那些小工具，大部分是免費，有些還提供付費的進階版，普羅大眾不見得需要具備很強的電腦能力，就可以使用這些專業化的功能了。

小故事：
   在這間學校的部落格中，我見到陸官圖書館彭石森主任的照片，就想到之前去拜訪過他，他出身軍中體系，也曾到過外留學，以前我服役的部隊他也待過同一個體系，不過我要講的故事不是他，而是我去拜訪前，衛兵跟我換個證件，進去之後，整個校內都沒什麼人，出來後上了車走沒多遠，有一個中校見了我的車就跟我敬禮，嚇了我一跳，害我不知道要不要搖下車窗，但又怕搖下之後很尷尬，想著想著就開到門口前，有個排長帶兵經過我的車，竟然也帶隊跟我敬禮，這下更堅定我不要搖下車窗，趕快走人，現在想起來覺得滿有趣的。

【新聞】Wiley-Blackwell的併購案將會降低取得學術研究資源的機會

   剛剛那篇才說要update一下Wiley與Blackwell併購案的消息，馬上就看到這一篇，滿有趣的。
   Peter Suber在他的部落格Open Access News中提到The Wiley-Blackwell deal will reduce access to research information。
   文中說，有五個歐洲地區的圖書館組織， CURL, EBLIDA, LIBER, SCONUL , SPARC Europe, (真是才疏學淺,今天才認識前四個單位)在這個月10號寄給European Commission's Directorate General for Competition (歐盟底下的一個單位)的執行長Philip Lowe一封公開信。
   信中說這五個單位代表歐洲的研究及教學型圖書館的利益反對此併購案，因為很多研究都提到併購後的出版社，通常會大幅調漲期刊刊價…等等，並表達願意拜訪該委員會的成員，提供更多的資料供他們做參考，這些話其實我們常聽到圖書館界提到，但是這五個單位發了個公開信給歐盟專責處理併購案的單位，感覺有十足的創意，值得給他掌聲鼓勵鼓勵，不過目前還沒有聽說European Commission's Directorate General for Competition或是出版社有何回應。
   Peter Suber最後還提到，這封公開信所持的理由，跟去年底美國的Information Access Alliance 發給美國司法部的公開信，表達反對此併購案的理由是一樣的，我稍微看了一下此信，發現上一封信應該鼓掌，這封公開信是在Wiley-Blackwell併購案消息出來的一週後就發了，簡直就是應該大力喝采，此公開信中，美國主要的圖書館學會如ALA, ARL, MLA等都有代表簽署，這裡有該聯盟的完整會員清單。
   從上面這些消息可以看出，歐美的大學圖書館們已經開始會對這些影響到她們權益的併購案發聲了，姑且不論效果如何，但是感覺這樣可以慢慢有一個平衡的效果，畢竟高刊價不只增加大學圖書館採購的負擔，也會影響學術資源的流通，且大家都懼怕出版業托拉斯的形成。

Blackwell Synergy平台更新

   已經快兩個禮拜沒有寫點東西了，不知道是這電子資源的環境有點冷還是我變懶了，不過我想應該是後者吧，應該要收收心了。
   昨天收到一封Blackwell Synergy寄來的網站改版通知信，乍看之下很開心，以為她們連網站都中文化了，這倒是繼Springer與某出版社(一時忘了)之後，提供中文介面的出版社，但是連過去卻發現沒有，小小的失望了一下，瀏覽了一下網站，發現這次改版主要是將Books Online的資訊加了進來，似乎大出版社們將電子書與電子期刊整合成一個平台，已經是大勢所趨了，其他內容似乎與舊版差別不大，有興趣的可以看看此文最後有摘錄那封信的內容(已將簡體字用MS Word繁體化)。
   關於這次改版，感覺有點不方便的地方是，在首頁將主題(Subject)的部分展開時(點那個+號)，畫面會閃一下，而且是點一下就閃一下，看起來不是很舒服，另外他首頁的圖佔的版面似乎也太大了一點，感覺很佔空間，畢竟讀者是來查資料，不是賞圖的吧，還有剛剛提到Blackwell Synergy將Books Online電子書的部分加進來，其實也只是個連結，連過去之後，也只是將書名貼在網路上，連書的連結都沒看到，不知道是因為我沒有訂閱她們電子書的關係，還是電子書的內容尚未建置完成，記得應該是要可以用了才是，不過重點是網站也還未能提供同時將電子書與期刊內容整合作查詢的服務，呼!!抱怨了這麼多之後，仔細看了一下那份信的內容，可能是他的改版跟我想像的改版有落差吧，希望時間會慢慢改善這些功能囉。
   記憶好的人，可能會想到去年底轉載過Wiley與Blackwell的併購案，目前似乎也還未聽到任何的風聲，Wiley官方網站也沒有訊息(只看到她們營收增加的消息)，有機會再幫大家update一下啦。
